BrightSource formally breaks ground at Ivanpah

We’ve been building up to this for years—and now it’s finally here.  Today, BrightSource Energy joined partners, state, local and federal policymakers and more than 450 guests to commemorate the commencement of construction on the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System.  Groundbreaking ceremony speakers included:

  • U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar
  • Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • NRG CEO, David Crane
  • BrightSource Energy President and CEO, John Woolard
  • BrightSource Energy Chief Operations Officer, Israel Kroizer
  • Bechtel Corporation President of Renewable Energy, Ian Copeland
  • California Building & Construction Trades Council President, Bob Balgenorth

We’re proud to have been able to observe this historic project in such great company today.  Ivanpah, which will be capable of generating 392 megawatts of low-cost and reliable solar power for the state of California, represents the first of 10,000 megawatts of solar energy planned in the country.  It is the first utility-scale solar thermal project to be built in California in two decades and is a centerpiece project for clean energy expansion in the United States.  We’ll be posting photos and videos from the event soon!
